Full Disclosure: I don't know too much about cars, especially mechanically. Most of these are total crack pipes (or worse). Kinja is breaking and won't let me add pictures - this annoys me, but I am tired and don't want to fight with it.
So after my discovery of Copart this weekend. I decided to see if I could watch an actual auction because I was curious how it worked and what people would pay for cars in these states. There were quite a few that went for prices I would not have expected (both high and low). However, all of my analyses was done by looking at pictures so many more important details about the cars are hidden. Here are a few of the interesting lots that came across the block today.
1. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ($1,100)

Now this particular car has some stuff going for it: the title is clean and the only real damage appears to be some dents on the exterior and a few missing articles on the interior. However, it also has a lot not going for it. It's a C230k which is not the greatest MB in the world and it has 155k miles which is a lot no matter how you look at it. On the bright side, I don't think it could depreciate any more though I was surprised that it went for as low as it did compared to some of the other lots.
2. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ($6600) (Rejected)

This one is a bit brave and is highly dependent on the damage underneath. If it is just the part in the picture (of the suspension that Kinja won't let me post), it might not be that bad; however, I doubt it. The bidding did not get above the reserve price and the seller rejected the bid. So it looks like you will have a chance to pay even more for it. Probably not worth it though (even after you erase all of the penis marks).
3. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! Renegade ($2000)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Everyone seems to be looking for winter beaters, well here is one for you. A 2003 Jeep Liberty Renegade with 150k miles and a pushbar to knock all of those stuck Camrys. It's got a salvage title, but the body lines look fairly straight. My guess would be either a well-repaired accident or a transmission failure.
4. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! Carrera ($8400) (Rejected)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
This one is interesting because from the pictures, it looks like it is mechanically intact. A bit of body work is needed which will probably drive the invest up from $8400 + ~$700 in fees to about $15k. However, non of that matters because like the Z4 the seller rejected the max bid and wants more.

Jag, 6 Cylinders, Brown, Wagon - it is basically the most Jalop vehicle that sold today.
6. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ($20,100)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
This car I posted yesterday and I just wanted to update that it sold for $20,100. Not the greatest savings in the world for someone outside of the auto resto business as you can find older Vipers for around $33k depending on mileage.

A Tesla Model S for 50% off, what's the catch. Well I don't know other than it is a salvage title with past damage. To me it looks like an electrical fire waiting to happen. Again the seller decided that that price was insufficient and has relisted the item.
8. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! TURBO ($1,100)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Here we have a fairly high mileage Audi A4 Turbo. 176k miles would turn off a lot of people, but this one looks relatively clean, has a clean title, and may be a nice cheap piece for the Audi enthusiast.
The auctions were kind of interesting. There were people paying $1000 for a Mini Cooper that was broken in half or >$45k for a Land Rover that had been flooded. Really it just shows where all of the shady car dealers go to get their vehicles. It was also interesting to see how many foreign bidders there were (not just from North America but from across the pond).
Is Copart better than Craigslist for finding a project or LeMons car? - absolutely not. Copart has too many fees for the common project person or LeMons racer. However, for the mechanically inclined, they are a source for (a few) cheaper cars, and we are always looking for those.
